How do I enable VSTO error / display alerts in Excel?

Learn how to enable the VSTO display alerts in Excel - useful when DataDear is not working properly or is not visible in Excel.

The windows environment variable ( VSTO_SUPPRESSDISPLAYALERTS ) can be set for enabling detailed Excel and VSTO (Visual Studio Tools for Office) error messages when loading VSTO add-ins. This is helpful to investigate errors related to the installation or loading of DataDear within Excel.

Steps to set the variable

  1. Close Microsoft Excel

  2. From the desktop, right click the Computer / This PC icon (depending on the operating system used).

  3. Choose Properties from the context menu.

  4. Click the Advanced system settings link.

  5. Click Environment Variables … (or click on letter N) to open the Environment Variables window:

  6. Under the System variables, select NEW and enter VSTO_SUPPRESSDISPLAYALERTS with a value of zero (0).

  7. Click ‘OK’ to save the variable

  8. Open Microsoft Excel and enable the DataDear add-in from the Excel options. You should now get the full error of why the add-in is not loading.

  9. Contact the DataDear Support team with the details of the error.
